The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and independent trade union representing the interests of doctors and medical students across the UK. The BMA is also a major stakeholder in the development of healthcare policy.

The International Department is looking to recruit a Senior Committee and Research Officer on a 12 months fixed term contract. The successful applicant will take forward the Associations work on global health and international development in addition to providing support in other areas of the International Departments work.

Key responsibilities will include:

    Managing the BMA`s Medical Fair and Ethical Trade Campaign to promote ethical procurement in the NHS
    Research and policy analysis on a range of international development issues of interest to the BMA membership
    Coordination and assessment of a charitable fund, the Information Fund, which supports health organisations in developing countries.
    Coordinating and updating the International Department`s web pages on the BMA website to ensure maximum impact

The post holder will be responsible for raising the departmental and organisational profile on key issues through effective networking and engagement with external stakeholders including UK government, the National Health Service, the Medical Royal Colleges, the international development community and others. The post holder will also be required to develop relationships with other BMA departments on issues where there is a shared interest.

The post holder must be educated to a degree level or equivalent, have a good knowledge of international development issues and have excellent research proficiency. Analytical, written, oral communication, strong negotiating and influencing skills are vital for the successful applicant. You must have proven project management experience and the ability to work autonomously. Experience of lobbying and campaigning, including developing campaign strategies is also required.

It is desirable for the post-holder to have a postgraduate degree in global health/international development or related field and/or practical experience of global health issues in a developing country context. Experience of monitoring and evaluating fundraising, as well as budget management is advantageous.
